RANDALL MARKS
Raised in Philadelphia, Randall Marks began training on scholarship at Tidewater Ballet with Susan Boree, Irtha Kitt, Edward Villela, Gene Hammet, Pat Sorell and Robert Steele. His natural talent was featured in Graduation Ball, Concerto Borrocco, Spanish Rhythms, Don Q Pas De Deux, and Copellia. Mr. Marks then studied with Joffrey Ballet, Washington Ballet and accepted an apprenticeship with Pennsylvania Ballet where he trained with Lupe Serano and Benjamin Harkave. As soloist with Ballets Elan and then Principal with Atlantic City Ballet his distinctive grace was acclaimed performances of the Green Boy in Les Patineurs, the Prince in Swan Lake, George Balanchine’s Valse Fantasie, August Bournonville’s Flower Festival Pas de Deux, and Stuart Hodes’ Abyss. Mr. Marks was invited to dance at the Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival and with Finis Jung’s Chamber Ballet USA in New York City. As principal dancer with Ballet Austin, Dance Magazine described him as “a cocky young Gene Kelly, hoofing his heart out.” Featured roles included Allegro Brillante, The Fairy’s Kiss, Rhythmetron, Triangles, House of Bernarda Alba, and Promises. He toured internationally with New York City’s Dennis Wayne’s Dance Company then accepted a position with New York City Metropolitan Opera Ballet Company ad guest starred with Connecticut Ballet Theater and Garden State Ballet. After several invitations, Mr. Marks returned to Ballet Austin in ballets including Other Tangos and Elektra. Eager to expand his versatility in dance styles and looking for a choreographic outlet, Mr. Marks accepted the position of resident choreographer/principal dancer with Tapestry Dance Company. His Stepping Over the Line, A Tango Perhaps, and Toward the Within were received with praise. Joining forces with (now wife) Jeanne Marie, he began a partnership that has taken him across the country and on board some of the finest six-star cruise ships performing many of the classic pas de deux. His dancing has taken him to over 62 countries and has always sparked excitement in audiences. Mr. Marks has judged for the American Ballet Competition and has taught, choreographed, and coached throughout the U.S. including Atlantic City Ballet, Richmond Ballet, as well as teaching for the Joffery summer program. Mr. Marks was director of ballet for the Austin School for the Performing and Visual Arts, and now owns and directs Texas Metropolitan Ballet in Killeen Texas.

JEANNE MARIE MARKS
A native of New York, Mrs. Marks trained with Fumio Inagaki, David Howard, Larry Long, Igor Youskevitch, Moscelyne Larkin, Anatole Vilzak, Nathalie Krassovska, Norbert Vesak, Finis Jhung, and Robert Joffrey. Recognizing her ability early on, she was accepted into Ballet Austin’s junior company and was soon performing demi-soloist roles with the professional company. She was personally selected for ballets by prominent choreographers including Arthur Mitchell for Rhythmetron, Igor Youskevitch for La Fille Mal Gardee, Loyce Holton for Triangles and Alun Jones for The Fairy’s Kiss. She studied on scholarship at the Balletschule fur das Opernhaus, and Schweizerische Beruf Balletschule in Zurich as well as the Basler Ballet. Mrs. Marks toured nationally as soloist with Indianapolis Ballet Theatre and performed as a soloist for several seasons with the Ruth Page Foundations in Chicago. While earning a double degree in Linguistics and German, she was hired as principal dancer for Austin Contemporary Ballet and guested with companies throughout the U.S. working with talented partners including; Houston Ballet principal Phillip Broomhead, Pacific Northwest Ballet soloist John J. Todd, La Grande Ballet de Canadian principal Kenny Larson, and Joffrey Ballet’s Jeremiah O’Connor. In joint performance with Tapestry Dance Company, Mrs. Marks was reunited with Randall Marks (now her husband and favorite partner), which ultimately led to their working together in unique partnership throughout the U.S. and onboard some of the finest cruise ships on the high seas. Her favorite leading roles have been; Cinderella, The Sleeping Beauty Rose Adagio, Diane & Acteon Pas de Deux, Spartacus Pas de Deux, Spring Waters Pas de Deux, Don Quixote Pas de Deux, Sugar Plum Fairy, Beauty and the Beast, and Alice in Wonderland. She has been seen in leading roles from Raymonda & Paquita, among other dances with the Austin Classical Ballet. Mrs. Marks now focuses on her husband and son while assisting with Texas Metropolitan Ballet.

TEXAS METROPOLITAN BALLET
Presents
THE NUTCRACKER

Act 1, Scene 1:
THE STAHLBAUM HOME
Christmas Eve at the Stahlbaum house, is filled with guests staying for the holidays. Clara and her brother, Fritz, are waiting outside the closed parlor doors where the adults are decorating the tree. As the children wait, they imagine what presents they will receive. Other children begin to gather outside the parlor doors and they too, are eager to find out what they will receive. Once the tree is finished, the doors are thrown open and they stand in awe of the tree sparkling with decorations.
The children are amused with a story as the party begins, and when a march is played, the children begin to dance. Soon the parents join in the fun and the room becomes full of lively dancing. Suddenly, they are interrupted by the loud knocking and entrance of Herr Drosselmeyer, Clara’s godfather, a mysterious and magical clockmaker. Drosselmeyer is also a talented toymaker and has brought gifts for the children, including lifelike dolls who dance to the delight of all.
Putting them away for safekeeping, more presents are given out to the children, but there seems to be nothing for Clara. Then Drosselmeyer reveals the most wonderful gift of all: a wooden nutcracker carved in the shape of a little man. Clara adores it and proudly displays it to her friends. Fritz and Franz jealously grab the nutcracker and as they fight over the doll, they carelessly break it. Clara is heartbroken, but Godfather Drosselmeyer magically fixes him. The young girls join Clara as she comforts her wounded doll, but are disturbed by the raucous play of the boys. The parents send the children to bed, and finish the evening with an elegant dance.
After everyone else has gone to bed, Clara returns to the parlor to check on her beloved nutcracker. Finding him, she curls up with him in her protective arms and falls asleep. The room begins to crawl with Rats and as the clock strikes midnight, Clara awakens surrounded. Drosselmeyer appears and Clara finds herself in the midst of a battle between an army of toy soldiers and the rats, led by their King. The Nutcracker comes to life to lead the soldiers. As the Rat King advances on the wounded Nutcracker, Clara bravely distracts the Rat King long enough for the Nutcracker to overpower him.
